The patients advocate (pvp) is on your side
If you have been admitted to or are receiving day treatment at a Psychiatric Institution, other people often decide what is good for you. Their decisions can conflict with your own opinion. You may be dissatisfied with your psychiatrist or nursing care. You may not agree with your medication, or not be allowed to go out. This is when the patients advocate (or in Dutch; patiëntenvertrouwenspersoon, pvp) can support you. The pvp will work together with you to find a solution. The pvp is a patients' rights expert. He can tell you precisely what your rights are in the institution or during your treatment. All pvp help is free of charge.
What can the pvp do for me?
Certain rules apply during your treatment. You will also come into contact with psychiatrists and other care-providers. You may disagree with one of them or one of the applicable rules. Consulting a pvp can provide clarity. First of all, the pvp listens to your story. Then, he organizes your criticism. You then present your complaint or question to a member of staff. You can do that on your own or together with the pvp, but only when that is what you want. You will frequently get a reply within a short space of time. Sometimes quick solutions are not possible. If this is the case, the pvp can, together with you, approach the department head or the management. The pvp will not do anything without your knowledge or consent.
The institution in which you are staying or being treated, has a complaints committee. You may request that this committee assess your complaint. The pvp helps you file the complaint and present it to the complaints committee. He will support you during the hearing.
Can I trust the pvp?
The pvp is pledged to secrecy. He will treat your information as confidential. The pvp is independent of the psychiatric institution. He works for the Stichting Patiëntenvertrouwenspersoon (Patients’ Advocate Foundation). Nevertheless, the institution is obliged to cooperate with the pvp in the handling of your complaint.
How do I get to talk to a pvp?
You are allowed to contact the pvp at any time. This could be during therapy or while in isolation. The pvp will then make an appointment with you. If you are admitted you’ll find the name and telephone number of the pvp on the leaflets on the ward. Or just ask the nurses or reception, they will know how to get in contact. Consulting the pvp is your right.
When your treated at home or when you receive day treatment, you can contact the pvp-Helpdesk at 0900-444 8888. You can reach the Helpdesk between 10.00 -16.00 hours on weekdays and between 13.00 -16.00 hours on Saturday. Complaining about the pvp
